Disappointment for Ballincollig RFC

Ballincollig Rugby Club hopes of promotion to Division 2 were dashed on Sunday last when they were beaten by a very well drilled Killorglin side in front of a huge crowd.

It finished on a score of Ballincollig 8 – Killorglin 19.

Killorglin were crowned champions with Waterford City a close second.

Before a very big crowd Ballincollig started well and took the game to Killorglin who conceded a penalty for offside which was converted by Denis Galvin from 40 meters out.

Killorglin’s only visit to the Ballincollig 22 area was after 18 mins and resulted in a try from a lineout which was converted. Score 7pts to 3pts for Killorglin.

Ballincollig played with heart and courage but could not break down the oppositions defense.  After 30 mins Killorglin got their second try from some good  handling by their backs and with the conversion left the score 14pts to 3 pts in favor of Killorglin at half time.

After the restart Ballincollig were given a lineout on the Killorglin 22 meter line. An excellent catch by Denis Casey and a good offload to John Stevenson who burst through the line and a great pick and drive saw Fergal Considine go over just to the right of the posts. The conversion was missed.Ballincollig seemed to wake up again at this stage ,but try as they might they were unable to get through the Killorglin defense  After 30mins Killorglin capitalized on a miss kick by Ballincollig and counter attacked down the wing and scored in the corner. The conversion was missed.

The best for Ballincollig on the day were Shane Kavanagh, Keith Lynch, Fergal Considine and David Power.

Next Sunday 24th March Killorglin RFC will visit Ballincollig RFC in the last game of the Munster Junior 1 Division 3 League decider.

It will be a case of winner takes all.
A big crowd is expected from Kerry to support their team.
We will need all the support we can get and hope there will be a big crowd from Ballincollig.
This will be the last major game of the season for both clubs so we expect a hard fought game from both sides.

Ballincollig RFC advances into the next Round of the Munster Junior Cup!

Ballincollig progressed to Round 4 of the Munster Junior Cup after a hard fought 20-12 win over Bandon at Tanner Park on Sunday. Ballincollig opened the scoring after a brilliant break from full back Kev Ryan, who chipped the ball ahead for Andy Coughlan to chase it and touch it down just over the try line, with Kev Ryan, converting. Bandon fought back hard and a defensive lapse allowed them in a for a try under the posts to leave the scores at 7-7 at halftime. A great individual try from Dave Power mid way through the second half put Ballincollig 12-7 in front but it was a lead they could not hold with Bandon scoring 5 minutes before full time to draw the game at 12 points each.

In extra time Ballincollig lifted their performance considerably and a penalty from Denis Galvin and a late unconverted try of Rob Foolkes gave Ballinollig RFC a 20-12 win after an intense 100 minutes of Rugby.

The victory has now set up a 4th Round meeting with local rivals and Division 2 league leaders Muskerry in Tanner Park on January 27th.
