Ballincollig RFC Mini’s & Youths Rugby notes for weekend

Ballincollig 22     Skibereen 10

Ballincollig U16s  beat Skibbereen 22 points to 10 points in the Quarter final of the South Munster league. This was a highly entertaining match with good defensive and attacking rugby played by both teams. Skibbereen were defensively very good but Ballincollig had the upper hand in the lineouts and scrums. After the first 20 minutes  Ballincollig were 3 points down after squandering 4 good penalty opportunities due to poor decision making but in the last 10 min Ballincollig tightened up and were only deprived a score by the strong defence of Skibbereen. In the second have Ballincollig scored 2 tries from a combination of good forward and back play by passing the ball to the wings and stretching the Skibbereen defence and then working the ball back into middle of the pitch for the forwards to drive over for 2 tries with both converted. Ballincolligs scrum half also scored a great individual try but Ballincollig also leaked a try with a lapse of concentration in defence  but finished well with a well taken penalty. The players and coaches would also like to thank all the supporters and we will see you all at the home semi-final (Date to be confirmed).Well done lads!

BALLINCOLLIG RFC MINI & YOUTHS WOULD LIKE TO WISH ALL OUR MEMBERS AN SUPPORTERS A MERRY CHIRSTMAS NA HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Under 14s

Ballincollig under 14s fielded a depleted team due to temporary defections to other codes but without depletion of attitude or commitment. Ballincollig received the ball at the opening Kick off and began with great composure. The majority of the early play Ballincollig were stuck in their own 22 and initially struggling to make the gain line but the pressure eventually wained and Ballincollig pushed into the Crosshaven half with fortitude culminating in a try and conversion by James Kelly and Daragh O’Brien respectively. The Ballincollig lads had to combat initial forays forward by a committed Crosshaven side but again the Ballincollig defence held solid which the back row playing a major role in preventing any yardage forfeit. Ballincollig having weathered the storm broke in the Crosshaven 22 and james Kelly crossed over the line despite last gasp Crosshaven defenders reminiscent of Ginger McLoughlin’s try against England during the 80s, James carrying ball and opponents over the line. Daragh successfully converted and Ballincollig led 14-0. Initial pressure was relieved until the half time whistle blew. On the restart, Ballincollig fielded the ball but little yardage was gained as they struggled to make the gain line. Eventually the ball was kicked to touch from a clearance in the 22 landing at the half way mark. Within minutes of the restart Sean O’Hanlon Lane suffered a knee injury having fallen badly  and was taken off. This injury appeared to unsettle the side as a break by Crosshaven was made through the middle resulting in a try. Moments later another break and many missed tackles allowed Crosshaven right back into the contest on a score of 14-10, Crosshaven having missed both conversion attempts. With the score at 14-10 and with just four minutes left to play, Crosshaven battled hard in the Ballincollig 22  but the defence was stout however resulting in a major turning point with an injury to Ballincollig’s talisman James Kelly. James was replaced by some noble under 13s who had also stepped into the breach for the aforementioned Sean. Unfortunately lack of experienced showed and Crosshaven took full advantage and slalomed through the Ballincollig defence in quick succession to score two tries and convert both. The final whistle blew as the ball escaped over the bar and the game ended. A very disappointing result but well done to the lads who showed up on the day

Under 16s

Ballincollig U16s were beaten  by 20 points to nil by  Muskerry in their first league defeat this season. Ballincollig were 12 points to nil down at half time by giving away two soft tries due to poor tackling and allowing too much space to the opposition. Ballincollig could not put the phases together in the first half compared to their previous impressive displays .Ballincollig were out played in the set pieces and struggled to win their own ball in the line outs. In the second half Ballincollig were more competitive with good carrying and direct running but were unable to get over the Muskerry line. There was a lack of fluency and confidence in some of the moves and the set pieces but this team are well capable of putting this performance behind them and can look forward to another derby match with Highfield in Tanner Park next Saturday.

Ballincollig 48       Kanturk Nil

Ballincollig RFC U18s got back on a winning formula after a blip in Castleisland 2 weeks ago with a comprehensive win over Kanturk at sun drenched Tanner Park on last sat 22/11/14. Ballincollig got out of the traps with gusto from the start and Humphrey O Mahony touched down for his sides opening try on five minutes. It was apparent from the early stages that the home side were dominant in all areas of the field which was apparent from the final score line. On the 14th minute Dave Mc Coy gathered the ball on the half way line and danced his way through a number of tackles before touching down under the posts which Cameron Lucey converted. Dave was to follow with another try on the 18th minute this time from a lineout ball which was flashed through the backs and Dave came into the line from full back and duly obliged by crossing the whitewash for his second five pointer of the day. More misery was poured on Kanturk before the half time break as Humphrey O Mahony scored again after some excellent mauling by his rampant pack to leave his side points ahead and no way back for the visitors. Ballincollig lorded it at scrum time and lineout time where Fionnán Mc Dermott and Dave Barry were clinical and from their hall maul proved unstoppable before Humphrey got his hat trick of tries. The game was now over as a contest but Ballincollig piled on the pressure with tries from Eoin Sweeney, Cameron Lucey and James “Peaches” Kelleher with Dan Sweeney converting each. It was an excellent performance by the Ballincollig lads and what was most pleasing was the continuity of their play keeping the ball alive at every opportunity giving the opposition no time to realign and defend. Kanturk to their credit fought gallantly to the end but alas had nothing to show on the scoreboard for their efforts.

Credit to Bantry for having this game going ahead with pitches elsewhere being unplayable. A tough competitive and enjoyable game between 2 evenly matched teams. Ballincollig started off in great form and camped in the Bantry half for the first 5 minutes but failed to score. Then against the run of play in their first attack Bantry pounced on a loose kick and ran in from 25 yards for the 1st score.
From the kick off Ballincollig attacked again and in a promising Ballincollig back line move Bantry intercepted and ran in for their 2nd try. Weak defence from a Bantry tap penalty allowed Bantry in for a 3rd try. From the kick off and just on half time a fired up Ballincollig eventually got in for a driving score by Pauric O’Keeffe after powerful work by Shane Buckley and the Ballincollig pack.
Playing up the hill in the second half Ballincollig showed great commitment and spirit to score 2 more tries, one a 70 metre run from a tap penalty by Pauric O’Keeffe and the other from the always alert Liam Mc Garry who pounced on a loose ball over the Bantry line. Unfortunately Bantry got in for a try themselves and just edged the match by the 1 score. A great feed after the game from our hosts was well earned and the team continue to develop and eagerly look forward to our next match.

Despite poor recent weather the game against Bantry managed to go ahead this weekend and Ballincollig travelled with good support to play their 4th game of the league. Ballincollig’s recent good form in the league continued with a well deserved win in a tight game which could have gone anyway up to the last minute. Ballincollig opened up the score line with a well taken try under the post by their right winger after some great play in the centre put pressure on the Bantry team.  The conversion was taken to give the visitors a 7 to 0 lead. Bantry however were not going to let their visitors have it there own way and with a strong pack managed to put Ballincollig on the back foot and kept Ballincollig in their own 22 for a good 5 minutes before their pressure paid off to get their own try under the posts.  The conversion was taken; it was now 7 to 7. After the kick off Ballincollig got back into their stride and with a slight slope on the pitch favouring the visiting team in the first half the Ballincollig forwards, with some good intelligent play by their fly half, linked well with the back line and provided the winger on the right to get his second try in the corner.  The conversion in this case was missed and the first half ended Ballincollig 12 Bantry 7. Bantry had the slope in the second half and it was no surprise that Ballincollig came under pressure early in the second half.

However Ballincollig managed to keep a lot of the possession but with a slippery ball and wet ground the last pass on occasion came up short just when Ballincollig looked as it a try was in the making allowing Bantry to regroup.  Then in a break in the centre one of the Bantry centres made a great run down the middle and evaded a couple of tackles to get under the post.  The conversion was taken; it was now Bantry 14 Ballincollig 12. Yet this not the first time in recent weeks where Ballincollig have not lost their heads.  Again they managed to keep a lot of possession and make their way up the middle and make some great driving breaks by their fly half and centres managed to got up to the Bantry 22.   One such drive ended with a ruck on the far right side and one of the Ballincollig centres cleverly saw the gap on the blind side to make a sprint to the corner to score.

The conversion was difficult and missed, but Ballincollig were back on top, Ballincollig 17 Bantry 14.  Despite a few nervous 5 minutes to go, Ballincollig kept the ball well and tackled hard when needed to close out the game.  A great display by the team but in particular from the forward back line and the scrum and fly half who linked up so well with the back row.  Well deserved win lads!
