Dolphin have contacted us to cancel all mini rugby fixtures against them this Saturday.

Training for U7s to U12s will be as usual at 10am sharp.

Registrations are being taken and in the clubhouse and the club shop will be open selling club kit, teas/coffees and snacks.

Under 8s

Ballincollig v Dunmanway

The U8s embarked on their first away trip of the season on Saturday, traveling to Dunmanway, where they faced a very strong opposition.  Dunmanway put the points on the scoreboard early on and Ballincollig struggled to break through their resilient defence. However, it wasn’t long before the visitors replied with a great try from Darragh.  With Dunmanway continuing to run in the tries, Ballincollig regrouped in the final break and showing some great team spirit, came out fighting.  With the traveling support getting behind the lads, the team worked hard in the final minutes and were rewarded when Sean got into the corner for a try on the final whistle.  They displayed some great passing, runs and tackles and showed just how much they are improving every week. Well done lads.

Under 9s

Ballincoillig v Highfield

Ballincollig under 9s went to Highfield and had a good outing. We learned a few bits from our day out. Against much stronger opposition there were great performances from Ronan Power, Rory Kiely, Diarmuid Ward and Dean Carey, Eoin O Brien & Connor Dodd also did very well. Well done lads

Under 10s

Ballincollig v Dunmanway

Dunmanway were first to score from a quick break after some very good rucking. From the tip off Dunmanway managed to turn over the ball with some very aggressive rucking and scored again with a very swift break and three passes to cross for another score. Ballincollig again tipped off and a quick pass to the short side gave Darragh O’Mahony the opportunity to break the through the line and using his pace managed to jink his way to the line to score.  After hard, aggressive tackling by Ben and Conor, Michael Twomey picked up the loose ball and headed off on a wide run and scored in the corner. Ballincollig took the lead from another turn-over, after the ball was ripped from Dunmanway by David O’Sullivan, who managed to set the ball up for Darragh Keohane to pick out a pass which again led to another score. Dunmanway scored on the stroke of half-time. Despite the best efforts of the Ballincollig defence Dunmanway managed to score from a quick breakaway on the left wing. From the tip off, Michael O’Mahony took the ball into contact and supported by Melanie Kavanagh managed to drive Dunmanway back towards their own line, then with quick hands managed to spread the play wide through five sets of hands releasing Michael Twomey to score in the corner. Dunmanway replied with another quick breakaway try, to level the scores again. Ballincollig again took the lead after David ripped the ball from the hands of an advancing Dunmanway player, passed the ball to Ben who broke through the first tackle with some great rucking from Michael and Louis presented the ball to Jonah who quickly passed to Darragh to cross for the lead yet again. Dunmanway tried to break through the Ballincollig line on several occasions, but with some outstanding tackling & rucking Ballincollig managed to keep them out. With Conor, Ben, Louis, the 3 Michaels, Hugh, Melanie, David and both Darraghs making tackles and Jonah and Jacob breaking up loose play Ballincollig managed to prevent Dunmanway from scoring again. Well done lads

Under 11s

Ballincollig v Highfield

Ballincollig U11s traveled to Highfield to compete in a blitz. Other teams competing were Bantry, Dunmanway and the hosts Highfield. Ballincollig won their first two games against Bantry and Dunmanway and drew in a highly competitive final game against the hosts. Again you did your club and yourselves proud. Well done to all the Ballincollig players. Well done lads

Under 12s

Ballincollig v Dunmanway

Ballincollig travelled in strength to Dunmanway on what was a glorious morning for a game. Boosted by the return of players that missed last week, the Ballincollig lads were eager to make an impression. Our lads had to again, like last week play 2 separate squads against a Dunmanway squad who turned up short on numbers. For their part, the Dunmanway lads were very strong in the tackle and carried well. They exerted pressure on our boys from the start and our inability to tackle with conviction led to some soft tries for the home team. Talent will always shine through and once our lads woke up our ability to spread the ball to the speedy backs, led to some fine tries. The second half saw Ballincollig being much more aggressive in the tackle area. Good team play and player support led to a few more Ballincollig tries. Even though our lads won comfortably, they will, I’m sure be nursing some of the hits received from a strong and physical Dunmanway outfit. Well done lads

Under 15s

Ballincollig 17  Dunmanway 12

Ballincollig under 15s added another win to their league campaign with an away win to Dunmanway last Saturday by beating Dunmanway with a score of 17 points to 12 points. Ballincollig should have won this game by a bigger margin as they played the better rugby in both halves but were 12 points down at half time by giving away 2 easy intercept tries and because they could not convert their high possession advantage into scores. In the second half Ballincollig kept the ball tight and played around the fringes with only releasing the ball wide when the space was available and this led to 3 well taken tries and the win. Again this was a great squad performances as there was a few players who did not play last week but grabbed their opportunity this week with great performances and proves what a strong squad Ballincollig have this year. Next week the 15s are playing our neighbours Highfield at Tanner Park which is always an entertaining game and all support is welcome. Well done Lads

Saturday morning started chilly enough and it took awhile for our players to thaw out too in their first match against one of our visitors on the morning, Shandon, a few tackles were missed and a few balls dropped but by the end we were coming back but ran out of time. Next up Shandon played our other visiting team Charleville, while they played their game we brushed up on our tackling and passing, the tackle bag was well used by the time it came for us to play Charleville who had done very well against Shandon, so we knew this was going to be a very close game. Charleville had an exceptionally talented player who our team found difficult to stop at first, but the training we did between the two games paid off as the players got into the game and matched Charleville all the way to the finish. It was a great morning’s work with every one of the players showing great improvements in everything they did.

Under 12s

Game 1

Ballincollig v Shandon

As Shandon travelled in small numbers, Ballincollig split their squad in two and the first half began with both teams slow to take the initiative. Some scrappy play and poor ball retention at the start soon gave way to an intense battle up front and Shandon drew first blood. Ballincollig threatened at every opportunity when the ball went wide and scored 3 fine tries. The second half enabled Ballincollig to bring on the rest of the squad and being fresher slowly got the upper hand over a tiring but organised Shandon outfit. A few tries for both teams drew applause from the sidelines. A very sporting game with both teams feeling that they have room for improvement.

Game 2

Ballincollig v Charleville

This game pitted our boys against a fit strong Charleville side. Ballincollig, having had game time already started quicker and showed good hands and ball retention but failed to score. As Charleville came into the game their quick running caused our lads problems and some missed tackles gave Charleville the lead. Encouraged from the sideline, to push up their defensive line helped Ballincollig to put pressure on the Charleville runners and it began to pay dividends. Ballincollig scored a few tries to pull ahead and despite some good line breaks by Charleville’s nippy no 9, Ballincollig never really looked like relinquishing their lead and ran out winners. Squad James Kelly, Sean O Hanlon Lane, Eoin McNabola, James McArdle, Denny Kiely, Niall Kiely, Daniel Dineen, Cian Kilkenny, Paul McAllen, Kieran Murphy, Emmet Costello, Ronan Hennessy, Evan Dodd, Rian O Keeffe, Cian Galvin.

Under 15s League

Ballincollig 23 v Kinsale 17

Ballincollig started their league campaign with a win in Tanner Park last Saturday by beating Kinsale with a score of 23 points to 17 points. This was a very close game with Ballincollig coming out on top with tries from Stephen O’ Reagan and the man of the match Ben Kehoane who also scored 2 conversions and 3 well taken penalties. Ballincollig did well in the scrum and they managed to win 3 against the head but the Ballincollig lineout was weak and was an area where they turned over easy ball. The two tries came from running good lines and straight running. Overall this was a good performance and Ballincollig did well to win in the last 10 minutes coming from 17 points to 13 points down. There is plenty to work on especially in the loose but well done to the whole squad on the first league win

Ballincollig v Clonakilty

Ballincollig Under 17s continued their league campaign with a home game against their West Cork counterparts Clonakilty @ Tanner Park on last Sat 20th October. The home side were playing against the breeze and were very prominent in the early exchanges but as hard as they tried through Peter Kelleher, James Kelleher, Robert Nyhan, Robert O’Donoghue Cian Shanahan, Humphrey O’Mahony, Michael O’Shea, Daire Buckley, Cian O’Leary, and Stephen Mc Grath they could not register a score to show their superiority. However, the game changed for Clonakilty in the final 10 minutes of the half and after some slick handling through their backs they touched down in the corner to register the opening score and before the referee blew for halftime, the visitors had added two more tries and a conversion. The Ballincollig backs of Colin O’Leary, Daire Conway, Fionnán Mc Dermott, James O’Donnell, Cameron Thornton, Shane Quinlan, Aaron O’Flynn and Cormac Larkin tried every move possible to rescue the game but sadly, it was not to be. On the resumption, Clonakilty continued from where they left off and added three more tries without reply. This was a very difficult assignment for the Ballincollig lads who found it very difficult to cope with the pace and guile of Clonakilty. Ballincollig travel to picturesque Kinsale next Sat 27th October 2012 to ply their wares against the home side there with better fortunes hopefully in the horizon.

Under 19s League

Ballincollig/Muskerry 15 v Clonakilty 15

This was the first competitive match of the under 19 league season for the newly combined Ballincollig/Muskerry under 19 team, formed due to both clubs with low player numbers. The game started with the visitors dominating possession resulting with an early try 5 minutes into the game to the Clonakilty side which was not converted. With only three training sessions together as a combined unit showed in the early stages of the match as it took almost 20 minutes before the Ballincollig/Muskerry side got any substantial possession. Some good work around the pitch from Tim Murphy (No8) defensively and offensively helped to compose the home team. This saw the home side score a long range try through some individual brilliance finished off by good support work levelling the game 5 all. Ballincollig/Muskerry finished the half the stronger adding another 5 points taking them into the break 10-5 up.

The second half saw a Clonakilty fight back with two quick tries regaining the lead for the visitors, but with 5 minutes to go Ballincollig/Muskerry showed their heart with a dominant forward display capped off by the backs levelling the score 15 all. The home side was unlucky not to snatch the victory with the last play of the game but the draw was a fair reflection of the match. Strong games up front from Ballincolligs James Cook and Dave Cantwell along with back rows Tim Murphy and Shaun Tynan and co captain Eolann Treacy ensured the newly formed side were competitive and at a time when the home side were defensively frail substitute centre Conor Petterson stood out tackling everything that came his way keeping the home team in the game.

Early days with a lot of potential.

Ballincollig 23 Midleton 17

Ballincollig under 15s continued their unbeaten run in Tanner park last Saturday by beating Midleton with a score of 23 points to 17. Ballincollig had a poor first half display with plenty of missed tackles combined with individual displays rather than a team effort which resulted in Midleton scoring 3 tries.This was really a game of 2 halves as in the second half Ballincollig tightened their defence and began to play as a team which resulted in Ballincollig scoring 4 well taken tries and overall a much improved performance. Ballincollig under 15s start their league campaign next week with a home game against Kinsale so lets hope they can maintain their unbeaten run.

Ballincollig 0 Bandon 20

Ballincollig under 17s commenced their South Munster Rugby Season on last Saturday 13th October 2012 with a difficult away assignment to Bandon. Ballincollig with the aid of the breeze opened the encounter brightly and played most of the first 30 mins in their opponents half but try as they may they could not register their superiority on the score board. It was in one of those dominant spells that Ballincollig were attacking the Bandon line by flashing the ball out through their backs when the ball was intercepted and the Bandon centre ran 50 meters and registered the first try of the game for his side which was not converted. The Ballincollig Boys continued their dominance from the re-start and were holding their own with their forwards taking to their opponents but just before half time Bandon scored another break away try to leave them 10 points ahead against the run of play it would have to be said.  On the resumption of the game Bandon with the aid of the breeze now used that advantage and kept the Ballincollig lads pinned back inside their 22. From a resulting line out Bandon gather the ball and with good forward play again crossed the Ballincollig line in the corner for their 3rd try. Ballincollig for all their efforts had nothing to show and were deflated at this stage and their heads dropped as well as their resistance and just before full time Bandon ran in their 4th try. The Ballincollig lads deserved much more for their efforts that the score line suggests. However there were notable good performances from Colin Casey on the wing who later filled the No. 9 position, James O’Donnell at full back, Aaron O’Flynn , Peter Kelleher, James Kelleher, Humphrey O’Mahoney, Robert O’Donoghue and Michael O’Shea.

A summer-like morning welcomed Kinsale RFC U8 to U12 teams to Tanner Park where a series of highly entertaining and hard-fought games were played out between the two clubs.

U11s

Ballincollig v Kinsale

The match was played in with great spirit and the result was in doubt until the final quarter.  Both sides swapped scores regularly in an very entertaining game for all those fortunate to witness this game in which all squad players got game time. These hard working teams were finally separated by some strong and free running scores in the final quarter by the Ballincollig squad and both teams can be proud of their performance and the manner in which the game was played.

The future is bright in Tanner Park.

U12s

Under 12’s played host to Kinsale on Saturday. This was the second game of the year for this team and was played in glorious Tanner Park sunshine. The Kinsale forwards started very strongly and gave a exhibition in rucking. As good a display of defending their own ball you could hope to see at this level, or even a age grade higher. However, a team are as good as they are allowed play, and after a while our Ballincollig lads got stuck in and contested every ruck. The Kinsale team realised they were in a game and not a training session. This resulted is a very even and exciting game. Some great passing movements from both sides resulting in some excellent tries. Every ball was contested and there were no easy scores.

Having parents supporting the teams on the sideline added to the excitement. A very sporting game, both teams respecting each other. Another example of a Ballincollig team playing uncompromising rugby in the spirit of the game.

It was also exciting to see the team put what they had learned in training into practice on the pitch.

The under 12’s will be training for the next two weeks – building on their strengths and  plugging gaps from their first two games.

U13s

Ballincollig 15  Old Christians 12

Ballincollig under 15s maintained their unbeaten run when they beat Old Christians 15 points to 12 points last Saturday at Tanner Park. This was a close contested match with some great forward play and back play by both teams. Ballincollig’s tackling and defensive line had much improved from the previous game as did the rucking and the mauling. It was great to see the backs and forwards combining and supporting each other when attacking. Ballincollig do need to improve their place kicking as this might go against them in the league.

U17s

Ballincollig 21     Sundays Well 34

Ballincollig RFC Under 17s played host and continued their preparations for the start of next weeks League with a stern and hotly contested encounter with Sundays Well @ Tanner Park  Ballincollig on Sat 6^th October 2012. In the first 10 minutes, Ballincollig forwards took the game to their counterparts early on and had the upper hand but Sundays Well’s defence stood firm and against the run of play they found themselves inside the Ballincollig 22. The ball spilled as a result of a defensive error and the Sundays Well side took full advantage and with some good running open the scoring with a well deserved try to go ahead 5 nil. From the restart, the Ballincollig lads increased their intensity and were awarded a scrum just outside the 22 metre line. After a number of phases in which the forwards notably Peter Kelleher, Robert O’Donoghue, Cian Shanahan, Daire Buckley, Humphrey O’Mahony, Michael O’Shea, Stephen  McGrath picked and drove at the Sundays Well line on a number occasions and scored a well deserved try when Robert Nyhan finished off the move and scored under the posts which Aaron converted. The home side now led 7 pts to 5.

Sundays Well struck back immediately and with some slick handling, their pacey backs again breached the Ballincollig defence with a well-worked try to go back into the lead, which they never relinquished for the remainder of the game. On the resumption, Ballincollig again worked hard and after some trojan work again by the forwards Jack O’Sullivan at scrum half flashed the ball out through the backs Aaron O’Flynn, Fionnán McDermott, James O’Donnell, Cameron Thornton and Colin Casey before Dave McCoy came into the line from full back and scored a great try in the corner. Aaron O’Flynn also added a penalty. However, Sundays well were not yet finished and again with slick handling and pace they scored another good try, which they converted. Ballincollig struck back again through their forwards and when Peter Kelleher took the ball forward he was unstoppable and scored his side’s third try. Sundays Well were now rampant and added two more tries before the referee called an end to proceedings. It was an enjoyable game of rugby played in a great spirit and in ideal conditions which the home side can take many positives from.

Ballincollig Minis

Ballincollig Minis U8 to U12 welcomed our near neighbours Muskerry to Tanner Park and a great series of exciting and competetive games were played out between the two clubs.

Muskerry then joined us in the clubhouse for food and refreshments.  A big thank you to all the parents who brought sandwiches, cakes, sweets and sausages to the hall on the morning.  It was a fantastic response from everyone and was very much appreciated by hungry players, coaches & parents.

Under 13s

Ballincollig U13s played their first game of the season against a very strong Christians side at Tanner Park on Saturday. Ballincollig started well but with the sheer size and power of Christians it was only a matter of time before they wore Ballincollig down.  It is a big learning curve and challenge for the U13s this season but a challenge we are sure they will rise too and take head on.

Ballincollig U15s

Ballincollig 22 Muskery 19

A tough game was expected as we played an away challenge match against Muskerry, and that’s exactly what we got. We started poorly and roughly 15 minutes into the game Ballincollig were 19-nil behind, due to poor tackling and not being competitive at the breakdown. We rallied well and our hard work paid off with a well worked try, our tails were up going into the last quarter of the match. Our forwards worked very hard at both set pieces and in the loose. Our backs ran straight and fast, put the ball through the hands smoothly, which resulted in a fantastic but close win 19-22. A lot more hard work to be done before the League starts.

Under 15’s

Ballincollig 15 Sundays Well 5

Ballincollig under 15’s had a winning start to their season when they beat Sundays Well 15 points to 5 points last Saturday at Tanner Park. Ballincollig took a while to settle into the game and after some hard work in the loose, line out and scrum areas eventually got some quality ball where Paul McCoy scored two fine tries and a superb taken try by William Ronan in what was an entertaining and competitive game.

Mini’s under 8 to under 12 have a blitz in Tanner Park from 10:00 to 12:00 with our neighbours Muskerry providing the opposition.

Under 13’s are playing their opening game of the season against Christian Brothers College kick-off 11:45 on the main pitch. This is a Huge Occasion for this group of players as they will now start to play on a full size pitch and begin their journey in adult rugby. Please come and support these young players and make this the huge occasion it is while watching the future stars of Ballincollig R.F.C.
