Ballincollig ladies team take on Young Munster in the second round of the All-Ireland League next Sunday at 1pm in Tanner Park.  The ladies continue to build momentum following an excellent performance and away win against Shannon last week.

Lets get out there and support the Ladies on Sunday!!

Ballincollig RFC v Young Munster 22-09-2013

Ballincollig Women got their league campaign off to a winning start with a 17-5 victory, away to Shannon in a windy Coonagh on Sunday.  First-half tries from Aoife Deasy and Emily Cleary gave the visitors a 10-0 lead before Shannon replied with a try to reduce the gap to 10-5 heading into the break.

A further try from Aoife Deasy in the second half which was converted, despite the difficult weather conditions, by Grace McNamara, sealed the victory for Ballincollig.  Given that this was the first competitive game of rugby for a number of the starting XV, makes for a promising season for the side.

The victory is a great boost ahead of the squads first home game of the season this Sunday, when they take on Young Munster in Tanner Park, kick-off, 1pm.  All support is welcome.

Ballincollig extended their lead at the top of Group A following their 20-10 victory over Nenagh Ormond on Sunday. Ballincollig claimed a narrow 11-7 win over their league rivals earlier in the season and were under no illusion as to how tough this encounter would be.

Ballincollig got off to a good start and Grace McNamara was unlucky when the ball she was chasing crossed the dead ball line in the opening five minutes.  Nenagh Ormond launched an attack and when Ballincollig were outnumbered on the wing, the visitors took advantage with Caroline Cahalan running in the first try of the afternoon.  The convserion fell just short.  Ballincollig headed into the break trailing 5-0.

The home side opened the half with intent and piled the pressure on the visitors.  With Nenagh defending on their try line when ‘Collig were awarded a penalty, they were unable to keep them out as Grace McNamara drove over the line for her first of the day.  The sides were now level five a piece after the conversion was missed.

The second half saw some great phases of play as the home side dominated possession. Ballincollig were reduced to fourteen following a yellow card but remained in control and took the lead after Grace scored her second try.  Breda Leonard added the extras. A well kicked penalty from Breda and the home side were leading 15-5 heading into the closing moments of the game. Nenagh retaliated with a try to reduce the gap to 15-10 but a try from Breda Leonard before the final whistle wrapped up another crucial victory for Ballincollig.

The win makes it three from three in the Women’s Munster Cup campaign with the final group game against Division 1 Champions U.L. Bohemian this Sunday in Annacotty.

With Ballincollig forced to concede home advantage due to a waterlogged pitch, the ladies found themselves on the road to Limerick for the second group game of their Cup campaign.

Having claimed four points last weekend and all other matches in Group A being postponed, Ballincollig were two points clear at the top of the group heading into this fixture.

Weather conditions made it a difficult game to settle into and with ‘Collig having the wind to their advantage in the first half they were anxious to register the points in the opening forty.  Just before the break Aoife Deasy got over the line to score the first try of the day. Breda Leonard split the posts to add the extras.

Both sides had their share of injuries resulting in quite a stop start second half but it wasn’t long before Ballincollig got on the board again.  The second try came from a superb phase a play.  Grace McNamara made a great call clearing the ball up field with Stephanie Downey giving chase, outrunning the opposition and kicking the ball on twice to touch down just before the dead ball line.  Shannon retaliated with a try to leave the score 12-5 heading into the final fifteen minutes.

The visitors were forced to defend in the closing moments but never looked like relinquishing their lead.  Emily Cleary must be acknowledged for her outstanding performance, bursting through the Shannon defence with immense power and speed on more than one occasion.

The win leaves Ballincollig six points clear at the summit ahead of two tough games against Nenagh Ormond and U.L. Bohemian.  But the two successive victories leaves them well placed in their quest to qualify for the All Ireland Cup.

Ballincollig face Nenagh Ormond on Sunday the 3rd of February at Tanner Park, kick – off 1pm.

Ballincollig Women got their Munster Cup campaign off to a winning start with a hard fought victory away to Fermoy at The Showgrounds on Saturday.

Starting the half well they found themselves inside the Fermoy 22 within the opening few minutes.  A great line out steal from Roisin Ormond and the ball was spread out to the backs with Grace McNamara getting under the posts for a try.  Breda Leonard added the extras.

The pitch conditions made things difficult for both sides and Ballincollig battled hard to retain their lead throughout.  The only other points coming from a well kicked penalty from Breda Leonard on the final whislte.

Ballincollig have also been grouped with fellow Division 2 South teams, Shannon RFC and Nenagh Ormond RFC and Division 1 Champions UL Bohemian RFC.

Up next is a home tie against Shannon this Sunday.  Having been defeated at home by the Limerick side in the opening league game of the season, they will be seeking a victory this time around.

Kick off on Sunday is 1pm followed by the Mens Munster Junior Cup fixture between Ballincollig and Muskerry at 2:30pm.  Come along and show your support for both teams in their cup ties.

The I.R.F.U organised an Interprovincial competition for Under 19 girls. Munster, Leinster and Connacht lined out at Limerick Institute of Technology (Ulster have no girls under 19 team). Munster were captained by Ballincollig’s Roisin Ormond who is one of the stand out players this season for the Ballincollig ladies team.

Munster played Connacht in their first game and won 28 points to 0. Next up were Leinster who proved to be a tougher outfit but in the end Munster ground them down and leading by example was their captain Roisin Ormond. Munster were pushing hard for a score but knocked the ball on just outside the Leinster 22 after some great play by the Munster players. After three scrums the referee lost his patience with the Leinster forwards and awarded Munster a penalty which was taken quickly and was taken on by a pod of three Munster forwards. Ball presentation was perfect for Ballincollig’s Roisin Ormond to pick the ball form the base of the ruck and drive for the line. Three Leinster players tried but failed to stop Roisin from crossing the line in the corner for a superb try which was the catalyst for Munster to kick on and win by 24 points to 0. A fantastic honour for Roisin who not only earned a call up to the team but also had the honour of captaining the side to victory in the competition.

Munster take on Connacht next Saturday – venue and time TBC.

Well done Roisin from all Ballincollig players, members and supporters. We are sure there is lots more to come from this bright young star.

Congratulations to Ballincollig’s Roisin Ormond who has been selected for the Munster U19 Women’s Squad for the 2012/2013 season.  This is a fantastic achievement for Roisin who has been one of the standout players so far this season.  Ballincollig RFC members, coaches, players & especially the under 7s would like to wish you every success for the coming season.

Following their emphatic 25-0 victory away to New Ross last weekend, Ballincollig were determined to continue on winning ways when they faced Nenagh Ormond at home on Sunday.  The tie was going to be a defining moment in their season, with Nenagh sitting just above them on the table. The home side got off to a great start, showing just how hungry they were for this game, attacking straight from the kick off.  They were rewarded early on with a penalty, which was well executed by Christina Broderick.  Putting Ballincollig 3-0 up in the opening minutes. Nenagh responded by pushing the Ballincollig defence and they were penalised deep inside their own half. With the home side now defending on their line, Nenagh ran the ball and touched down for a try, which was subsequently converted. Ballincollig went on the attack and Christina was on the mark again, when she accurately kicked another penalty, sending the home side into the break trailing by just one point on a score line of 6-7.

This was Ballincollig’s game to lose and they started the second half with intent.  The scrum was much improved, having struggled at times in the first half.  Aoife Deasy made a break inside her own half and securing a pass to Grace McNamara who was supporting on her left shoulder, sent the No.10 on a superb run, scoring in the left corner.  Ballincollig failed to convert and they held onto a four point lead heading into the final stages of the game. The visitors mounted an attack and put Ballincollig under pressure, asking questions of their defence in the closing moments of the game.  But they kept calm, defended with resilience and refused to let Nenagh take anything from this game.  They held on under the attack to claim a second and well deserved win. They now occupy fourth place on the table just a point behind Galbally and Nenagh Ormond, setting up an exciting clash at home against table toppers, Portlaoise RFC on November 11th.

Well done Ladies!

Ballincollig found themselves defending in the opening minutes of the game, following an early Young Munster turn over, but a great tackle by Linda Kennedy lead to a knock on by the home side.  The ensuing scrum set up a good clean ball allowing Breda Leonard to clear the lines with a kick back up the pitch.  However, the Limerick side recovered possession and mounting an attack, broke through for their first try on the 5th minute, which they failed to convert.

Ballincollig fought back from the restart and were awarded a penalty for infringements at the breakdown.  A run at the Young Munster defence saw Roisin Ormond, in only her second start at senior level, deservedly score her first try between the posts, with Breda Leonard successfully converting.

An accidental knock on as play resumed and Ballincollig were defending once again. Some heavy tackles by Ciara Stafford, Davina Fenton and Linda Kennedy put Young Munster under pressure. However, the home side were awarded a penalty on the 22, which was slotted between the posts.

Ballincollig were unfortunate to miss two penalty opportunities before the end of the first half which also saw Breda Leonard being replaced by Aoife Hurley due to injury. The visitors went into the break trailing by just a point on a score line of 8-7.

Young Munster’s lead was increased two minutes into the second half when they scored their second try, adding two further points for the conversion.

Ballincollig began to gain ground after Dav made another excellent break off the back of the scrum. With fifteen minutes remaining, substitute, Grace McNamara made a great break for the right corner following a quick penalty on the 10 meter line, but Young Munster won a turn over ball as a result of a Ballincollig knock on.

It wasn’t long before the home side scored their third and final try when their no. 8 kicked their penalty into the right corner, which was gathered by their fly half, touched down over the line and was subsequently converted.

Ballincollig continued to attack and with 5 minutes to go, won a Young Munster scrum. Dav popped the ball Grace who got over the line in the right hand corner for a well deserved try.  Zoe Grattage was unlucky not to convert, with the ball dropping just short of the posts.  Ballincollig continued to attack the Young Munster defence until the final whistle.

Next up is a home tie against Nenagh Ormond on Sunday 14th of October, kick – off 1pm.
