Mini’s & Youths: Match reports & Mini’s fixtures

U13 rugby league v Carrigaline sat 14/2/15 Tanner Park

Sunny Valentines day greeted both teams and supporters to Tanner Pk for this first league match in Section 4 of the South Munster U13 league.

With 18 to choose from Collig kicked off and in a even first 15 mins defended the persistent Carrig attack, especially Rhian Brennan who made 2 great tackles in this period.
Just when Collig thought they had survived this spell a break from the Carrig centre midway between 22 and half resulted in the opening unconverted score.
Collig came back and with impressive rucking and a break followed by an upfield kick brought them inti the Carrig 22. With good handling and support Pairic O’Keeffe crossed for the equalising score, unconverted.
Half time 5 – 5.

The second half started and rather then Carrig upping their game Collig seem to forget theirs and allowed Carrig score not one but 2 quick tries, 1 converted. 5 – 17 to Carrig with 20 mins to go.
Collig did then pick up the pace and following a high tackle on Chris Moran in the Carrig 22 a quick tap penalty saw Paraic power his way over for his 2nd try, unconverted. 10 – 17.
Collig felt they were on a roll and with intelligent kicking keeping Carrig on the backfoot again put pressure on which resulted in a typical powerful run by Patrick Kelly who stretched out to touchdown for Collig’s 3rd try, unconverted. 15 – 17.

With the entire squad contributing amid positional changes Collig attacked from the kick off and another kick and chase by Captain Liam McGarry caused confusion in the Carrig defence and Liam scored under the posts with the conversion by Shane Buckley. 22 – 17 and still 7 mins to go.
Carrig who were never out of the game, came back strongly and had some strong mazy runs and only last ditch tackles prevented them from getting that elusive equalising or winning score.
Final score Ballincollig 22 Carrigaline 17.

A team performance full of effort and commitment with Patrick Kavanagh, Shane Buckley, Cathal MacDermott particularly effective in the tackles.
