Women’s AIL Division 2S Result – Young Munster RFC 22 Ballincollig RFC 12

Ballincollig found themselves defending in the opening minutes of the game, following an early Young Munster turn over, but a great tackle by Linda Kennedy lead to a knock on by the home side.  The ensuing scrum set up a good clean ball allowing Breda Leonard to clear the lines with a kick back up the pitch.  However, the Limerick side recovered possession and mounting an attack, broke through for their first try on the 5th minute, which they failed to convert.

Ballincollig fought back from the restart and were awarded a penalty for infringements at the breakdown.  A run at the Young Munster defence saw Roisin Ormond, in only her second start at senior level, deservedly score her first try between the posts, with Breda Leonard successfully converting.

An accidental knock on as play resumed and Ballincollig were defending once again. Some heavy tackles by Ciara Stafford, Davina Fenton and Linda Kennedy put Young Munster under pressure. However, the home side were awarded a penalty on the 22, which was slotted between the posts.

Ballincollig were unfortunate to miss two penalty opportunities before the end of the first half which also saw Breda Leonard being replaced by Aoife Hurley due to injury. The visitors went into the break trailing by just a point on a score line of 8-7.

Young Munster’s lead was increased two minutes into the second half when they scored their second try, adding two further points for the conversion.

Ballincollig began to gain ground after Dav made another excellent break off the back of the scrum. With fifteen minutes remaining, substitute, Grace McNamara made a great break for the right corner following a quick penalty on the 10 meter line, but Young Munster won a turn over ball as a result of a Ballincollig knock on.

It wasn’t long before the home side scored their third and final try when their no. 8 kicked their penalty into the right corner, which was gathered by their fly half, touched down over the line and was subsequently converted.

Ballincollig continued to attack and with 5 minutes to go, won a Young Munster scrum. Dav popped the ball Grace who got over the line in the right hand corner for a well deserved try.  Zoe Grattage was unlucky not to convert, with the ball dropping just short of the posts.  Ballincollig continued to attack the Young Munster defence until the final whistle.
