Ballincollig RFC won the U18 League and capped off a great season for the club.
In a hard fought game against local rivals Muskerry, Ballincollig edged it 22-19 to take the title.
Congratulations to all involved, in particular the players, coaches & parents for all their dedication & support throughout the season.

Under 12s
The U12s travelled by bus in the company of the Muskerry U12s for the annual Pan Munster Tournament in Rockwell College v With 16 teams from right across Munster and further afield attending it was a great opportunity to gauge our standards and see how we would square up to new opposition. The panel of 15 players along with supporters arrived early to sunshine and set about warming up. We were placed in a group of 4 with Abbeyfeale, UL Bohs and Kilfeacle. Games were 10 aside and 10 minutes a half. The first match V Abbeyfeale was disappointing with little to show and only a score in the final minute keeping away a blank score-line for Ballincollig. Abbeyfeale were stronger in every area – rucking, lineout, restarts, running, our tackling was non-existent and they eventually outscored us by 6 scores to 1. Hard words were spoken after the game as we know this group are capable of far better but they had let themselves down on this occasion. The good news was that at least they had the opportunity to turn it around quickly in the next game against UL Bohs. This they did and a far hungrier Ballincollig tore into UL Bohs and gave a totally opposite performance to that given in the previous match. Everything they didn’t do in that game they did now and it is impossible to name any individuals as they whole panel bought into what was expected of them and played brilliantly. We eventually won 6 – 2 and looked forward to the final game against Kilfeacle.
This game was a much tighter affair between 2 evenly matched teams and Ballincollig again showing their determination to just edge out winners by 4-3. Special thanks to the pack as they were limited in numbers and some guys had to play every minute of the games which can only stand to them in the future. Variety of injuries were picked up during the day but we should see everyone back in action in time for Tralee.
A big thank you to our hosts, Rockwell College, who ran a special and well organised event, laid on a mini banquet afterwards and had a surprise guest, the 6 Nations Trophy, for everyone to hold and have a picture taken with. This is a great way for U 12s to finish their year and kick on to U13s next year when their game changes to 15-side and full pitch. Thanks to all Ballincollig players, coaches and supporters and special mention to Marie for the “ambulance” service back to Cork.

Under 13s
Mallow 12 Ballincollig 29
Ballincollig U13s travelled to Mallow on Saturday for an early kick off at 10.30. Both teams had met back in October in Tanner Park and in that close game Mallow came out the winner. Ballincollig have continued to improve every week and this was evident in the way that the lads communicated to each other, knew the importance of field positions and not to panic when under pressure. With the aid of slight slope in the first half Ballincollig got 2 tries under the post plus the conversions. Mallow were a good physical team and pulled back a try of their own in the corner after a 5 yard scrum but the conversion was a hard one and missed. Ballincollig kept the pressure on towards the end of the first half and their efforts were awarded with a great drive down the centre which opened up the Mallow defence. Excellent support play by Ballincollig meant they recycled the ball from the resulting ruck and scored their 3rd try. The second half started with Mallow putting on the pressure. Mallow are a good team with big forwards driving the pack well. All this pressure resulted with a try for Mallow when the Ballincollig backs got sucked into the centre allowing Mallow to bring the ball out wide and score a try. Some quiet words by the coaches reminding the Ballincollig lads not to get out of position was taken on board by the lads and soon they were once again showing great skill and support play. The lads were talking to each other and the heads did not drop. A lot of pressure in the corner ended with a try for Ballincollig with 10minutes to go and this had the effect of boosting the Ballincollig player’s confidence while Mallow appeared to lose a bit of theirs after all their hard work at the start of the second half. Ballincollig finished the stronger with another great try towards the end of the game after a lovely movement from one end of the pitch to the other wing and nice support play. With only a few weeks left in this season the lads have certainly come up a gear or two in their general play and skill levels but what is most rewarding to see is the way that the team is bonding and that everyone in the team is a valued team mate.
Under 14s
Ballincollig 14 Mallow 29
Ballincollig U14s put up a performance that made all the coaches and supporters very proud last Saturday but were outscored by a very big Mallow team. We dominated the opening stages but Mallow scored first with an unconverted try which was quickly answered by great play from Kieran O’Driscoll, Mikey Fitton, Reece O’Donoghue and Conor O’Buchalla which resulted in a try by Liam Fahy and converted by Jamie Holland to give us the lead. Mallow scored just before the break and again just after the restart which made it very difficult for our boys but we struck back with a great forwards try again converted by Jamie to bring the scores closer. Good performances by Ali Crowley, Eoin O’Neill, Daniel Smith, Zak Forde, Sam Kiely and James Moore made it difficult for Mallow right to the end
Under 18s
Ballincollig 20 Dunmanway 0
Following the successful trip to Wales the weekend before, it was back to domestic rugby for the U18 squad. The first Cup match of the season vs Dunmanway at home in Tanner Park. The game got off to a lively start with both Teams measuring each other up with forward and back moves testing the defences. Out half Cameron Lucey was first on the point’s board with a penalty in the 15th minute. 5 minutes later a huge Team effort attacking the Dunmanway line put Captain Peter Kelleher over in the corner for a try. It was defend ,defend, defend next as Dunmanway launched several runs with the Ballincollig line as the target. Try stopping tackles went in from all directions, Robert Donoghue, Fionann MacDermott and Shane Quinlan defending the lines well. No further scores saw it 8 – 0 in favour of the Home side at the half time break. In the second half both Teams spared nothing and launched some great runs in the backlines, marshalled well by Brian Verling at scrum half. The back line defence of Scott Vaughan at winger, Colin Casey at 13 and Dave McCoy ensured that the Dunmanway assault was kept at bay. Cian Shanahan came to the rescue when Dunmanway broke the line and looked like they were in for a score. No joy. A line burst from the backs with some great handling skills put Aaron McNamara in for a try in the 55th minute. Cameron Lucey converted to make it 15 – 0. As usual dominance in the Ballincollig lineout gave a great platform to attack, with great performances from James Kelleher, Daire Buckley and Humphrey O’ Mahony. Phase after phase of play put the ball through all hands on the Team and it was Mikey O’Shea that got over the line in the 69th minute to give Ballincollig a comfortable lead in the game. This was mission accomplished for Ballincollig with a score line of 20 – 0 at full time. Roll on the next round which should be at home in Tanner Park next week. A great game of Rugby ahead.

Under 16s
Ballincollig U16s beat Crosshaven in a league match last Saturday in Tanner Park with an impressive and structured performance. Ballincollig were very strong in the first half and were 20 points to nil up at half time. Ballincollig scored 3 tries in the first half after putting together some good phases of play. Two of those tries were touched down by Kieran Devany after good driving play by the forwards and good back play for the winger to score in the corner. Both teams scored a try each in the second half for a final score of 25 points to five in favour of Ballincollig. Match fitness showed in the second half as Ballincollig tired as this was their first match in 7 weeks. Well done lads on the win

Ballincollig U18 squad
Ballincollig U18’s season is going from strength following their recent League Semi-Final win over Mitchelstown. This now sets up a mouthwatering fixture against our near neighbours Muskerry in the Final. The date and venue are yet to be announced but we expect a large turnout to support the lads on the day.

Under 7s
Ballincollig U7s played their first match of the season against Fermoy on Saturday. The group were very eager to put what they had learned from training onto the playing pitch. Ballincollig played very well both tagging defensively and moving forwards with the ball. It was a very good performance for their first game and shows how much have they improved since September. They are looking forward to playing more matches in the future
Under 10s
Ballincollig U10s played Highfield away last Saturday. The day was cold but the rain stayed away long enough for us to have all three matches played. There was a great turnout Highfield had 30 players and we had 20 .We had a great display of rugby from both teams. It would be hard to imagine that Ballincollig could have improved on their excellent performance against Skibbereen a week ago but that’s exactly what happened. The lads put in some very good tackles from the start and the rucking was very impressive. Ballincollig won a lot of possession from turnover in the rucks and this resulted in some brilliant trys. With teamwork and determination they won all three matches. Well done keep up the good work
Under 12s
We welcomed Kinsale and Fermoy to Tanner Park and provided our loyal supporters with a winning double. Starting off on a tight heavy pitch and showing great determination all over the pitch won out 3 – 2 with tries from Pat Kavanagh, Liam Mc Garry & Oisin O’Grady. Kinsale were then victors against Fermoy. We then moved to the wide open and firm spaces of the main pitch for our match V Fermoy and despite conceding a quick 1st minute try the team recovered with some fine individual and team supported tries to end 5 – 3 winners. 2 first half tries by Liam and one great winding run by Eoghan Lynch were added to in the 2nd half by Diarmuid Nolan & Pat Kelly. The midweek training is paying off well and the improved performances of Nathan, Jack & Adam are evidence of that. The whole squad can rightly be proud of the efforts put in and we look forward to the away match v Dunmanway next. Well done everyone.
Under 13s
Bandon 20 Ballincollig 12
Ballincollig U13s travelled to Bandon on Saturday last. Due to strong winds this game was never going to allow the free flowing rugby we have seen from the lads. Bandon played with the aid of this strong wind and settled in to the match and weather conditions quicker than Ballincollig and this was reflected very quickly when after 5 minutes Bandon scored a try in the corner. 2 more try’s followed in similar positions but all conversions were missed leaving the game at 15 to 0 at the first half. It must be said however that this first half was not going all Bandons way. Some excellent defending by the Ballincollig forwards in particular prevented Bandon from scoring even more try’s. With the wind behind Ballincollig in the second half Bandon found themselves now on the defensive. Again great forward play opened up an opportunity for Ballincollig to deserving get their first try. The wind also prevented a successful conversion leaving it 15 to 5. Ballincolligs tails were up however and they continued to put the pressure on the home side. With 10 minutes to go it was the Ballincolligs backs turn to see a gap and find a great try under the posts. The conversion was successful, it was now 15 to 12. Ballincollig pushed for the next try but in the very last minute, against the run of play, Bandon picked up a loose ball and with both teams on the Ballincollig try line managed to squeeze the ball over the line. It was the last play of the game. Despite the result however Ballincollig showed great grit and determination in this game against a bigger physical Bandon team. Keep it up lads

Ballincollig U14s had to deal with not only a very strong Bandon team but also a very strong wind in the opening half of their league encounter in Bandon last Saturday. Even though Ballincollig dominated the scrums and took a few of the hosts lineouts Bandon proved too strong in the loose. Conor O Buchalla, Colm Touhy and Reece O’Donoghue worked hard for the forwards and good performances by Daniel Smith, David O’Driscoll and Sam Kiely kept us fighting to the last. Ciaran Curzon James Moore, Ali Crowley and Ryan Kilkenny showed great pride and courage coming on late in the game. Well done lads

Ballincollig 37 Fermoy 18
Ballincollig RFC U18s completed their league campaign on a high note away to Fermoy last Sat 25th Jan 2014 with a comprehensive victory against a dogged Fermoy outfit which booked them a place in the league semi final. The first half was played in arctic conditions with howling winds and driving sleet and rain, which made it almost impossible to play. Ballincollig opted to play against the hurricane in the first half and after soaking up pressure for 10 minutes inside their 22 they cleared their lines. Unfortunately, Dylan Desmond pulled a groin and had to be replaced. They won a line out through Fionnán Mc Dermott inside the Fermoy half and they mauled their way towards the opposition 22. They took a quick tap from a penalty award and Fionnan Mc Dermott proved unstoppable as he touched down for the opening score. Fermoy added a penalty but the Ballincollig intensity increased. They worked the hard yards inside the Fermoy 22 and again were rewarded for their efforts as the pack took control and Daire Buckley touched down for his sides 2nd try, which Aaron O’Flynn converted. Fermoy rallied and scored another penalty but Ballincollig finished the half stronger with their forwards grinding the opposition which resulted in Robert O Donoghue scoring another try for Ballincollig which Aaron O’Flynn converted and he added another penalty before half time to leave his side 22 to 6 ahead. On the resumption Ballincollig used the wind and after some broken play at a ruck Cian Shanahan picked and drove over the line to add another try. Mickey O’ Shea added another and Cian Shanahan helped himself to another try to complete the Ballincollig scoring. Fermoy to their credit never gave up and scored two tries themselves before the referee called a halt to proceedings. It was not a day for champagne rugby with both sets of forwards slogging it out at close quarters with Ballincollig winning the battle with huge performances from everyone namely Peter Kelleher, Dylan Desmond ( injured after 5 mins) Daire Buckley, Robert Nyhan, Cian O’Leary, Stephen Mc Grath, Humphrey O’Mahony, Mickey O’Shea, Dave O’Brien, Cian Shanahan, Robert O’Donoghue, Fionnan Mc Dermott. Their backs defended excellently when called upon through Brian Verling, Aaron O’Flynn, Cameron Lucey, Aaron Mc Namara, Scott Vaughan, Dave Mc Coy, Shane Quinlan, Jack O’Sullivan, Cameron Thornton, Colin Casey, & Daire Conway. Congratulations on getting this far in the league and hopefully more good days just lie ahead.

Match Reports Weekend 18/01/2014
Under 8s
On a decent patch of grass despite the recent poor weather, an eager Ballincollig bunch entertained Skibbereen. A more physical Skibbereen bunch started stronger and our lads at times were not alert enough at the restarts which gave the visitors momentum. As the game progressed the Ballincollig lads showed a huge improvement and went over for some fine tries. Some fine tackling and good team play was great to see.
Under 9s
The U’s played Skibbereen in their first game of the New Year and it was a superb performance by all involved. Their teamwork lead to tries from Steven Naughton, Brian Dore, Sean O’ Neill and Jack Leonard to help secure their first win of the season. Up next is a visit from Kinsale and Fermoy next weekend.
Under 10s
Ballincollig U10s played Skibbereen at home and they arrived in force with 30 players. We played 6 10minute matches. Our players were Eoghan, Zakk, Ben,Evan, Rory, Sean, Matthew, Diarmuid, Robert, Ronan, David, Daniel, Cathal, Conor, Jamie, Dean, Colm, Niall and Donal Og. We played Skibbereen away before Christmas and on that occasion we didn’t do as well as we should have.The same couldn’t be said about Saturdays performance, the lads played the best match of the season so far, they were absolutely brilliant. They tackled well, rucked well, passed the ball and supported each other but most of all they played as a team. Skibbereen were an excellent side they fought hard but everytime they scored the lads responded back driving forward maintaining possession and this yielded some brilliant trys. In the end the lads were victorious. Well deserved result for the effort they put in. The coaches would also like to welcome two new players tho the team Niall O’ Driscoll and Donal Og O’ Buachalla. Well done to everybody keep up the good work. See you all next week.
Under 11s
Skibbereen were the first visitors to Tanner Park in 2014, it was the first game back for both teams after the Christmas break. Skibbereen started at a very high pace and with some great plays building the phases managed to score in the corner to take the lead. Ballincollig kicked off and Skibbereen secured possession and quickly drove deep into the Ballincollig half, then with quick passing created an overlap and scored again. This spurred Ballincollig into action. A long kick off wasn’t fielded by Skibbereen backs and an excellent chase by Ballincollig forced a turnover and an easy score. Half Time Ballincollig U11’s 1- Skibbereen U11’s 2. The second half followed the same pattern as the first with Skibbereen showing the better skills and more determined play, and soon the regained a 2 score lead. Ballincollig fought back and after some great team work and good use of the ball managed to split the Skibbereen defensive line to score a very well worked try. Ballincollig mounted sustained pressure on the Skibbereen line in the dying moments and managed to create an overlap on the short side, but Skibbereen intercepted a pass and sprinted the length of the field to score the match winning try. Final score Ballincollig U11s 2 – Skibbereen U11s 4
It really was an excellent display of rugby from both sides, and the many spectators who attended enjoyed a great mornings sport.
Under 12s
Ballincollig welcomed a well coached Skibbereen team to the main pitch in Tanner park.
The 3 period game saw a finely balanced opening finish at 1 try each with Patrick Kelly showing his strength in going over from a 5 yard penalty. The second period saw Skibbereen score 3 unanswered tries and in doing so gave a fine display in holding a player up in the tackle thus winning the put in at the scrum. In The final period Ballincollig showed what they can do with impressive spirit, running and support play which resulted in scoring 3 tries to 1. Liam McGarry, Diarmuid Nolan and a last second try by Shane Buckley ended the game with Ballincollig just losing out 4-5. Thanks to the 19 of the squad who turned out of whom Conor Bray, Chris Walsh and Patrick Forde had impressive displays. Also we’re happy to report the leg injury to Diarmuid is not as serious as feared and he’ll be back in action in a couple of weeks. Training continues this coming Wednesday evening.

Ballincollig 14 Muskerry 12
What a difference a week makes. Ballincollig U13s were at home to their neighbours Muskerry on Saturday. Muskerry kicked off and for the first 10 minutes Ballincollig were under pressure and stuck in their own 22. Then Ballincollig turned over the ball and started to push up. A ruck on the half way line allowed Ballincollig to break away and get a great try under the posts. The conversion was scored and Ballincollig were 7 – 0 up.
Muskerry fought back and pulled back a try in the corner just before the end of the first half. The conversion however was a difficult kick and was missed leaving Ballincollig a head 7 to 5 at half time. The second half was as tense and tight as the first half with both teams showing great determination and effort. With 10 minutes to go, Muskerry had Ballincollig pinned on their try line for a number of minutes and despite gallant defending Muskerry drove over the try line after their scrum putting them in front for the first time. The conversion this time was put between the posts and Muskerry now lead 12 points to 7.
Ballincollig however did not let the heads go down and from the kick off went looking to equal the game. This time it was Ballincollig who was putting the opposition under pressure and a fine drive and maul had Ballincollig on the Muskerry 22. A resulting ruck gave the ball back to Ballincollig and a try was the outcome again under the posts to give the Ballincollig lads a chance to go in to the lead once more. The conversion was successful and despite some heavy pressure by Muskerry in the last minute Ballincollig held out to win the game 14 points to 12.
Under 16s
Ballincollig U16s beat Mallow in a challenge match last Saturday with an overall poor and rusty team performance. Ballincollig were 14 points to no score down after a very scrappy first half performance that lacked commitment, cohesion and under performance from all players except from William Ronan who had only returned from injury. After the half time talk and a few changes Ballincollig turned the game around with some great penetrating runs from Liam Mc Sweeney and Ben Jeffries and a man of the match performance from Tadgh Corkery who scored 4 tries. The final score was Ballincollig 24 points to Mallows 19 points. Even though this was not a great performance Ballincollig did will to turn it around. There is plenty of work to be done on the training pitch before our league match next Saturday. Well done lads on the win
