Ballincollig entertained Dunmanway on Saturday morning. Despite the miserable conditions a large crowd of supporters were kept entertained. The try count of 5 tries each was a fair reflection on players that at this age, once “switched on’ are eager to get involved and in time will learn and develop the skills of this fantastic team sport. Well done keep up the good work

Ballincollig faced Dunmanway in their first home game of the new season. They put in a great performance, in a game which saw tries from Jack Murray, Thomas Shanahan, Steven Naughton, Sean O’ Neill, Pete Kelly., Brain Dore and Jake O‘ Kelly. It was a brilliant display of rugby and a well done must go to all of those who played their first game in the Ballincollig jersey. Up next is Kanturk and Midleton who they will play this Saturday at home.

Ballincollig welcomed Dunmanway to Tanner Park for the first home match of the season. Just after kick off the heavens opened and a torrential downpour ensued, but this could not dampen the spirits and enthusiasm of both teams. Ballincollig were quickly out of the blocks and soon crossed for the opening score. With a large improvement in the rucking and counter rucking, Ballincollig were able to create several turn overs and soon crossed again after an excellent passing move. The second half started with Dunmanway on the attack, but with some great defensive work, tackling & rucking, Ballincollig were able to keep the visitors out, and with time running out Ballincollig sprung another attack and with quick hands created the opening to score again.
Full Time Ballincollig U11’s 3-0 Dunmanway U11’s.
Under12s
The U12s got there first win in their second game of the season defeating a full strength Dunmanway team. Ballincollig showed a huge improvement from the previous week with the protection for our tackled player especially impressive. Played in three thirds Ballincollig won the first and third sections and displayed a great hunger for ball possession and support play. All the squad fully committed to the game and we look forward to building on this for the season. Well done lads
Under 13s
Ballincollig U13s played their second match of the season against nearest neighbours Muskerry. Despite at times challenging weather conditions the game was free flowing with plenty of exciting rugby on display by both teams. Ballincollig this time around got the better of their opponents and managed to get 8 tries over the line to Muskerry’s 3. One of Ballincolligs tries in particular deserves a special mention as it involved play by almost everyone in the team and started in Ballincollig’s 22 and involved a number of rucks and superb support play by both backs and forwards. No doubt both teams will look forward to meeting each other again later in the season.
Under 14s
After a last year’s heavy defeat our U-14s knew they were against a very good Kinsale side. Courage, determination and commitment were asked for by the coaches and the whole team responded with a fantastic performance. Jamie Holland replied to an early Kinsale try with one of his own. Kinsale then scored 3 tries without reply leaving the score 20 -5. Ballincollig dug deep and some great forward play was rewarded with a try by Tiernan Quinn and converted by Jamie Holland. Our backline put Kinsale under a lot of pressure and a great try by Sam Kiely converted by Cian Bradley brought us to within a point of KInsale with momentum on our side. It was then Kinsale’s turn to dig deep and we were under a lot of pressure on our own line when Jack Casey broke out and ran the length of the pitch only to be stopped on their line. A last second try by a very good kinsale team secured the points for the hosts.
Under 16s
Ballincollig U16s maintained their unbeaten run when they beat Sundays Well 17 points to 14 points last Saturday at Tanner Park. This was an extremely entertaining match with some great forward play and back play by both teams. After an unconvincing start and being 7 points down Ballincollig improved their ball retention combined with powerful running which resulted in 3 well taken tries. Ballincollig struggled with the lineout at times but in the second half the scrum and 2nd phase play was impressive. It was great to see the backs and forwards combining and supporting each other when attacking. Ballincollig scored 3 great tries and a well taken conversion to 2 tries and 2 conversions. This team is showing great skills combined with team spirit and should be ready for the challenge of the first League match in Tanner park next Saturday against Charleville. Well done lads and best of luck next week

Ballincollig RFC hosted another very successful Munster Rugby Summer camp last week. The good weather and excellent coaching made it a very enjoyable week for all involved.
The highlight of the week was when we welcomed Donncha O’Callaghan, James, Coughlan, Denis Hurley and Casey Laulala who took part in the summer camp activities at the club with the young participants.
Roll on the 2013/2014 season!!
Ballincollig 28 pts Youghal 8 pts.
Ballincollig Under 17’s continued their quest for more silverware last Saturday with a league semi-final win away to Youghal.
Playing conditions were ideal but it was the home side who made the brighter start. Ballincollig failed to gather the start off and from the ensuing scrum and subsequent rucks Youghal spread the ball wide and went over unopposed after just minutes for the opening try of the game.
That certainly focussed the Ballincollig boys attention and they gained a stranglehold inside the opposition 22 . They won a lineout through Fionnán Mc Dermott and mauled their way to the line and Peter Kelleher touched down to open the scoring for Ballincollig after 16 mins to leave both teams tied at 5 each. Ballincollig pressure continued and they were awarded a penalty on the Youghal 22. Cameron Lucey duly obliged and added the 3 pts and gave Ballincollig a lead they were never to relinquish. Youghal fought hard and just on the stroke of half time they were awarded a penalty and converted to leave the sides level at 8 pts each.
On the resumption, Ballincollig with the aid of the breeze showed more intent, from a lineout they mauled forwarded, and Shane Quinlan took a pop ball at pace and was unstoppable as he crossed the whitewash to score his sides second try. This was followed shortly with a converted penalty by Cameron Lucey to lead by double scores 16 pts to 8. Ballincollig were now in the ascendency and the Youghal defence was creaking. Ballincollig constantly bombarded Youghal and Peter Kelleher took a ball on the run and scored his second try and Youghal’s resistance had now evaporated. As the final minutes were played out Youghal kicked a ball out of defence. It hopped outside their 22 and Scott Vaughan took it at blistering pace and jinked his way over the line to score his sides 4th try which was expertly converted by Aaron Flynn to leave the final score Ballincollig 28 Youghal 8.
It was a great team performance led by their captain Robert O’Donoghue who was ably assisted by Peter Kelleher, Dylan Desmond, Rob Nyhan, Mickey O’Shea, Humphrey O’Mahony , Fionnan Mc Dermott, James Kelleher, Daire Buckley, Cian O’Leary, Brian Verling, Cameron Lucey, Aaron O’Flynn, Dave Mc Coy Aaron Mc Namara, Cian Shanahan, Jack O’Sullivan and Shane Quinlan who again proved to be unstoppable from all areas.
Congratulations lads and best of luck in next weeks final against Dunmanway.
Ballincollig 8 pts Bantry 5 pts
Ballincollig U17s finally got their hands on some silverware on last Sunday with a hard fought victory over their West Cork counterparts Bantry to win the under 17 cup at P.B.C grounds in Wilton. The game was played in very blustery conditions, which dictated the nature of the game in both halves. Bantry played with the aid of a strong breeze in the opening half and the Ballincollig boys were forced to defend their territory for long periods but defend gallantly they did and the only scoring opportunity they gave the opposition was a penalty kick from 30 metres which they failed to convert. Bantry pounded the Ballincollig defence but there was no surrender with gallant tackling from Cameron Lucey, Aaron Mc Namara, James O’Donnell, Jack O’Sullivan ,Dave Mc Coy , Scott Vaughan, Aaron O’Flynn and Shane Quinlan on the wing who gave a masterful display of tackling and defensive skills.
Brian Verling marshalled proceedings from the 9 position and set the seeds for a wounderful display by the tigerish Ballincollig pack who were the masters at scrum, lineout and ruck time. Fionnan Mc Dermott lorded it in the lineout, which set the Ballincollig maul in motion, which yielded a number of penalties. Ballincollig kicked them down the line to ease pressure and gain territory. Bantry to their credit through some slick passing made inroads but could not breach a resolute Ballincollig defence. The half finished scoreless thanks to a Ballincollig side who put their bodies on the line and tackled everything that moved. On the resumption Ballincollig played with the aid of the breeze but a few unforced errors in the 6th minute gave Bantry some momentum and from a ruck on their 22 the Bantry scrum half gathered and sold a few dummies and scored the opening try of the game to leave the score 5 nil to the West cork side. From the kick off Ballincollig gained some territory and kept their opponents defending for their lives inside their 22 and one felt it was only a matter of time before their line would be breached. This happened on the 18th minute in the second half Ballincollig won a lineout and mauled their way towards the Bantry line and Dylan Desmond took the ball on from 5 metres and opened the scoring for Ballincollig with a well deserved try.
The sides were now tied and the next score would prove decisive. It came from Ballincollig pressure on the 22 as they picked and drove Bantry infringed on the 27th minute and a penalty was awarded to Ballincollig. Cameron Lucey stepped forwarded and struck a beauty, which went over with the help of the post a score which decided the outcome of this game Bantry 5pts Ballincollig 8 pts. The Ballincollig forwards of Peter Kelleher, Dylan Desmond, Robert Nyhan, Humphrey O’Mahony, Mickey O’Shea, Robert O’Donoghue, James Nyagaya and Fionnan Mc Dermott pounded the opposition to a standstill such was their ferocity and dominance for the duration of the game. One has to credit Bantry for contributing to a most enjoyable game but hats off to the Ballincollig boys whose fitness and sheer determination were the deciding factors in this great win.
Ballincollig Squad:
Steffen Bertram, Daire Buckley, Colin Casey, Daire Conway, Dylan Desmond, James Kelleher, Peter Kelleher, Felix Klitzsch, Cameron Lucey, David McCoy, Fionnán McDermott, Stephen McGrath, Aaron McNamara, Ray Murphy, James Nyagaya, Robert Nyhan, Dave O’Brien, James O’Donnell, Robert O’Donoghue, Aaron O’Flynn, Cian Aran O’Leary, Humphrey O’Mahony, Michael O’Shea, Jack O’Sullivan, Shane Quinlan, Cian Shanahan, Cameron Thornton, Scott Vaughan, Brian Verling,

Weekend 30th March 2013 Match Reports
U17 Cup
Ballincollig 40pts Mitchelstown 20pts
Ballincollig RFC continued their progress in the U17 cup with a comprehensive victory over Mitchelstown at Tanner Park on last Saturday 30th March 2013. The visitors opened the scoring with a penalty after 5 minutes but after that it was the home side who showed more urgency and on the 7th minute Robert O’Donoghue drove over the line to put Ballincollig in front and on the 12th minute Shane Quinlan gathered a ball from inside his own half and dissected the visitors defence with pace and strength and as he was ankle tapped just before the line Cameron Lucey was on hand to take the pop pass and dive over under the posts which he also converted. Ballincollig were now in the ascendency and with their pack totally dominating proceedings it was only a matter of time before Peter Kelleher added another try which was also converted. Mitchelstown added a try just before half time to leave the half time score Ballincollig leading 19 to 8. On the resumption Ballincollig’s supremacy continued and when awarded a penalty the quick thinking James Nyagaya took a quick tap and dived over for his sides 4th try. The home side were now rampant and both Cameron Lucey and Peter Kelleher who had already scored added further tries each and the game was well and truly won at this stage. They conceded 2 tries to the visitors in the last few minutes but the game was over as a contest. The Ballincollig boys are now in action again next Saturday 7th with a cup semi final awaiting them at Rathcooney V Old Christians. Good luck with that boys.
