Weekend 16th March 2013 Match Reports
U12s
As expected due to the bank holiday weekend, Ballincollig travelled to Bandon short a few key players. However those that travelled gave a spirited display against a quality Bandon side. The Bandon lads always had the upper hand due to their pace but the Ballincollig lads gave as good as they got over the four 10min games. Tries from both sides never came easy but thankfully there were no injuries to report. A repeat fixture with all the Ballincollig squad available would be a game to watch. Training Tuesday night at 6.30 pm.
U13s
In a very tough and competitive game that produced 8 tries Ballincollig U13s were beaten by a very good Cork Constitution side. Cork Constitution scored first and after some great play by the Ballincollig forwards Kieran O’ Driscoll went over for a great try. A great passing move by the Ballincollig backs ended up with Jamie Holland beating 2 Cork Constitution defenders to go over in the corner. More powerful rucking and mauling by the Ballincollig forwards was rewarded by a try scored by Tiernan Quinn. Good performers for Ballincollig were newcomer Cillian O’ Sullivan, Ciaran Curzon, Cathal Quirke, Eoin O’ Neill and in the forwards Mikey Fitton, Reece O’ Donoghue and Conor Coughlan. All 28 of the Ballincollig squad took part in the match. Training every Wednesday at 6.30 to 8.00 and new members are always welcome.

Weekend 9th March 2013 Match Reports
U8s
The U8s produced a superb performance in their victory over Skibbereen. Working really well as a unit they ran in six tries against the West Cork side. A hatrick from Pete Kelly, a brace from Sean O’ Neill and a further try from Steven Naughton showed just how much the lads have improved since playing Skibbereen earlier in the season.
U9s
9s Movers had a game in Skibbereen. Ballincollig played very well tries from Eoin O’ Brien and Jamie Dineen. We had great support play from Connor Brennan, Ronan Power, Cathal O’ Donoghue, Robert Dennehy, Colin Mullaley, Nathan Kiely and Ben.
9s Shakers had a game in Skibbereen also. Tries were scored by Dean Carey and Rory Kiely with great support from David Fahey, Daniel Keating, Diarmuid Ward, Evan Mc Ardle, Connor Morey and Sean Mischke. These were two great team efforts. Keep it up lads and see you all at training next Saturday.
U11s
Ballincoliig U11s traveled to Skibbereen and played a game in three periods of 15minutes each and the [playing standard improved with each period. Neither team deserved to lose and thats how it finished with a draw. Well done lads keep up the good work
U12s
Ballincollig U12s travelled to play a big physical Skibereen team. Ballincollig started the game slowly and conceded a couple of early tries. Ballincollig then realised that the bigger they are the harder they fall and with a much improved tackling and rucking performance in the second half worked their way back into the game. Ballincollig finished the game strongly with some very well worked tries and can be proud of their effort on the day.
U13s
Ballincollig 31 Dunmanway 20
Ballincollig got off to the perfect start when an attack which involved most of our players resulted in a try by Jack Casey. Dunmanway responded with an equally determined attack 5 minutes later with the same result. When another Ballincolligs attack was stopped on the line Colm Touhy was there in support to barge his way over to put Ballincollig in the lead again. Showing great determination Dunmanway again equalised. Just before halftime Jack Casey ran in another great try converted by Zack Forde. After the restart Dunmanway closed the gap with a fine try and would have scored another except for a very brave tackle by Liam Kilgrew. The forwards fought hard and were rewarded with a try by Tiernan Quinn and soon after Jack got his hatrick which was converted by Zack. Good performances by everyone especially Daniel Smith, Padraig Sweeney and Sam Kiely.
U15s
Ballincollig 5 v Dolphin 22
Ballincollig U15s were beaten in their cup match away to Dolphin last Saturday. After giving away 2 soft tries in the first half Ballincollig competed well in the forwards and the backs in a competitive and entertaining game with some great rugby. Ballincollig showed some great ball skills and some great defence but Dolphin were physically stronger in the forwards and ended up winning the game 4 tries to one. This year has been a good year with a top 4 finish in the league and gives us a good platform to work from for next season as the majority of this team will play under 15 again next year. Well done Lads
U17s
Ballincollig 34 Dunmanway 10
Ballincollig U17s opened their cup campaign with a home win against Dunmanway who they have met on two occasions already this season and have come out second best on both. The west cork side showed greatest urgency for the first 20 minutes and were rewarded with a well taken try in the corner after the home side conceded a penalty and a quick tap resulted in the first score of the game for Dunmanway. Ballincollig after winning a line out on the Dunmanway 22 they mauled forwarded and a few slick passes saw Dave Mc Coy score a try for Ballincollig and 5 minutes later Aaron O ‘Flynn took a quick tap from a penalty and scored a try in the corner which he also converted to leave the half time score 12 pts to 5 to the home side. On the resumption the Ballincollig continued their dominance and were rewarded with a try by James Nyagaya which was converted and a few minutes later James O’Donnell scored when he intercepted from a line out and crossed the whitewash under the posts. The home side were now rampant and after great mauling Daire Buckley touched down for another try. Dunmanway scored a try in the final minute of the game to leave the final score 34 pts to 10 in favour of the Ballincollig. Confidence is now high as the quest for silverware continues in both league and cup competitions.

Weekend 2nd March 2013 Match Reports
U/9s
Last Saturday the U/9s had a busy morning with games v Clonakilty and Kinsale. After a slow start we managed to pick up the tempo and tries were scored by D Fahey and Cahal O Donoghue and Tighernach O Leary. We had good games from Dean Carey, Diarmuid Ward, Mathew Hopkins, Daniel Keatng, Connor Brennan Zach Ben.
Well done lads keep up the good work
U/11s
A perfect morning greeted both Ballincollig and Clonakilty squads for this challenge The first period saw a strong running start from Clonakilty sprint in to a 3 try lead with Ballincollig yet to wake up. This changed in the second period with both teams swapping tries and Ballincollig just coming out on top 3 tries to 2. The final period was evenly matched with 3 tries each in a very entertaining occasion for all. |very well done lads and keep up the good work rate
U/17s
Ballincollig 19 Fermoy 12
Ballincollig Under 17s travelled to Fermoy and continued their good run of form with a hard fought victory over the home side. Fermoy showed the greater hunger from the outset and had Ballincollig pinned inside their 22 for the opening 10 minutes. Their backs were the more dominant outfit and during one of their many forays into the Ballincollig danger area James Nyagaya intercepted a pass and ran 50 metres to touch down under the posts which Cameron Lucey converted. Ballincollig were now 7 points ahead against the run of play. This gave them momentum. They won a lineout through Fionnan Mc Dermott on the Fermoy 22. They mauled and then popped to the inrushing Robert Nyhan and he was unstoppable from 10 metres and touchdown for his sides 2nd Try and Cameron Lucey again duly obliged with the conversion. As the half wore on Ballincollig controlled scrums, lineout’s and were particularly astute with the mauling technique which the opposition had no answer for. Ballincollig finished the half with a 14 point advantage but it has to be said that Fermoy contributed to an excellent game and were very unlucky not to have breached the Ballincollig line on at least one occasion. The home side continued their great work rate and were awarded with a try under the posts from a penalty tap. However Ballincollig regrouped and another successful line out yielded a try for Michael O’Shea again after an excellent maul. They were now 19 to and 7 ahead but the home side added another try and with the score 19 to 12 the final few minutes were nip and tuck and the final whistle was greeted with relief by the Ballincollig Boys. All forwards had immense games and the backs defended gallantly. Steffen Bertram got his first taste of Irish rugby on the wing for the final 5 minutes. Cup starts next week with a home game V Dunmanway. Well done again boys.

Weekend 23rd February 2013 Match Reports
U12s Ballincollig v Cork Con
Last Saturday the U12s welcomed a very strong and competetive Cork Con team to Tanner Park. For the second week in a row Ballincollig played superb rubgy and moved into a commanding lead early in the game. Great teamwork combined with some excellent individual skills resulted in Ballincollig scoring a number of fabulous tries. Ballincollig eased up a little in the second half to allow Cork Con score a couple of tries and get back into the game. However, a renewed emphasis on hard work and teamwork resulted in Ballincollig scoring two more tries to run out comfortable winners in the end.
Well done lads on a super display! Keep up the hard work.
Under 13s
Ballincollig 19 Douglas 27
Douglas got off to a flying start scoring 3 unconverted tries against our U-13s. Ballincollig showed great courage, team spirit and commitment and fought their way back into the game with tries from Jack Casey and Zak Forde and a conversion by Zak. Michael Buckley, Nicky Quinlan and Liam Mc Geough did great work in the forwards and Philip Minihane and Liam Kilgrew played well in the backs. A try by John O Connell converted by Cian Bradley was not enough to take the game from a very good Douglas side. Training Wed evening 6:30 on the pitch
Under 15s
Ballincollig were leading 10 points to 7 points before the match was stopped 10 mins before time as a precaution due to an injury which has turned out not to be serious. Both teams were fairly well matched with the try count 2 tries to one. This was a competitive and entertaining game with some great rugby played by both teams. Highfield were stronger in the lineouts and both backlines showed good attacking and defensive skills. In the first half the Ballincollig scrum was under pressure but tightened up in the second half and was a lot more solid. The Ballincollig backs played well as individuals but they need to start playing as a unit and this also applies to the backrow. Both number 8’s were the stand out performers on the day. Over all this was a solid performance but plenty of work to be done on the training pitch. Well done Lads
Under 17s
Ballincollig Under 17s continued their league campaign with a home game against Youghal at Tanner Park. Ballincollig started the game with great intensity and pace and for their efforts were rewarded after 6 minutes when they won a line out on the Youghal 22. They mauled their counterparts back and Dylan Desmond dived over to open the scoring having just been denied a try a minute earlier. Ballincollig grew with confidence where their pack were totally dominant against a much bigger Youghal forwards at both scrum and line out time where Brian Verling at scrum half marshalled the maul and Fionnan Mc Dermott and Robert O’Donoghue lorded it at the lineout. Just before the half, Michael O’Shea scored his side’s second try again after some great work by his pack and he dived over the line again from a dominant maul. The half finished 10 nil to the home side where a bigger score to the home side would have been much more appropriate such was their superiority. The second half started in similar fashion and it was more of the same when Humphrey O’Mahony turned over a ball on the 22 nothing could stop him as he touched down for Ballincollig’s third try which was converted by Cameron Lucey. Youghal to their credit fought hard to the very end but could not breach the Ballincollig line due to their resolute dogged defence. It was an overall good team performance, which the boys can be proud of with no doubt more testing games to come. The pack were well served by Peter Kelleher, Dylan Desmond, Robert Nyhan, Humphrey O’Mahony, Michael O’Shea, Fionnan Mc Dermott, Robert O’Donoghue, James Nyagaya, Dave O’Brien, Daire Buckley Stephen Mc Grath, Cian O’Leary and the backs defended brilliantly hence did not concede a score and they were well organised by Brian Verling, Cameron Lucey James O’Donnell Cian Shanahan, Jack O’Sullivan, Aaron O’Flynn, Dave Mc Coy, and Cameron Thornton. Next week end Ballincollig are away to Fermoy RFC. Keep it up boys.

U12s Blitz
Ballincollig U12’s welcomed two Highfield and one Sunday’s Well teams to Tanner Park last Saturday. First up was a closely fought contest against Highfield ending in a draw. Ballincollig then played the second Highfield team but were much too strong for them and ran out convincing winners. Last up were a strong Sunday’s Well team, but by now Ballincollig had really found their best form and were comfortable winners in the end. Months of training came together for the U12’s last Saturday and they gave a fantastic display of tackling, rucking, passing and running. Most of all though, they gave a fantastic Team display.
Well done lads. Keep up the good work!
U17s Tour to Wales
Last weekend, the U17 team headed off on their tour to Wales. On Saturday they took on St. Peter’s of Cardiff and later that evening headed to Parc Y Scarlets to watch Munster play Scarlets. Under 7s
The Ballincollig U7’s turned up to Sundays Well on a sunny Saturday morning to play their first match of the season. Ballincollig played two matches against Sundays Well. Ballincollig started off brilliantly with a darting run but missed out on a try by placing the ball before the try line. Ballincollig were brilliant in their defence and were all up to tag the oncoming opponents quickly. A try from Ballincollig and a try from Sundays Well left the teams level at full time. Ballincollig went into the second game rearing to go. From the start Ballincollig were up tagging the opponents to defend their try line. Some brilliant running from Sundays Well saw them break through the Ballincollig line and score a try. Ballincollig soon scored a try of their own at the other end of the pitch which again left the sides tied at full time. The U7’s impressed with their running with the ball and their tagging when they were without the ball. They were two very close games Ballincollig played and it showed how well they have been working at training in the last few weeks. Well done to all the boys.
Under 8s
First up for the U8’s in their blitz was Sunday’s Well which was tag rugby only. The lads adjusted to the last minute rule change well in a game that saw some great passes and runs. Next up was Youghal in which the tackle was allowed. Brian Dore produced some great tackles and Pete Kelly and Stephen Naughton made superb runs.
Under 9s
Travelled to Sundays Well last Saturday played 2 games won one lost one. Tries were scored by David Fahey, Jamie Dineen, and Rory Kiely Nathan. Others to play very well were Ronan Power Kieran Twomey, Sean Mischke Diarmuid Ward and Robert Dennehy. After the game we were treated to sandwiches and drinks by Sundays Well RFC. Our thanks to our hosts for the day.
Under 10s
Ballincollig Under 10’s travelled to Old Christians on Saturday 9th Feb for a blitz. Three matches were played in all. First against Old Christians which Ballincollig won 6-3, with an outstanding display of counter-rucking and swift passing. Resolute defending and great teamwork were the order of the day. The second game was against another Old Christians team which was a very hard fought, close encounter. There were some excellent defending and tackling skills on show from both sides, making scoring difficult. There was little between both sides throughout the game and it finished up 1-1. A fair reflection of the closeness of the game. In the third game Ballincollig came up against local rivals Muskerry R.F.C. and in with a great display of skills, Ballincollig went into a 3-0 lead before half time. The second half started off with a Muskerry score, but two more tries from Ballincollig rounded off an outstanding display. 5-1 was how it finished. So finishing up a blitz with a score of 2 wins and 1 draw, and scoring 12 tries, meant a very good days rugby was had by all. Congratulations to one & all involved
Under 12s
The Ballincollig lads travelled with 2 squads to Rathcooney on Saturday to play the home side old Christians, who also had 2 squads. Dolphin and Muskerry also arrived with one squad each. A dry and bright morning, for a change made for a good mornings rugby for all involved. Both of the Ballincollig squads gave a good account of themselves in all games. Lack of recent game time and a small bit of rustiness was costly at times for our boys on the scoreboard. On the plus side the intensity in the tackle and our eagerness get on the ball was great to see. Some fine team work enabled the lads to cross for tries in all of the games. If the weather stays on our side, our lads will be delighted to be involved in competitive games in the next few weeks.
Under 13s
A thrilling second half comeback by Ballincollig was not enough to overcome Muskerrys first half dominance. The Ballincollig forwards enjoyed superiority in the scrums and lineouts with good performances by Cameron Moorcroft and the versatile Mark O Connor. Padraig Sweeney at scrum half and Liam Kilgrew on the wing combined well with newcomers John O Connell and Connor O Buachalla who both did very well in their first ever rugby match.

Ballincollig 39 Old Christians 7
Ballincollig RFC under 17s opened their phase 2 league campaign with an away win against Old Christians @ Rathcooney on last Sat 2nd Feb. 2013. From the kick off they showed their intent and after winning a good line out they mauled the ball towards Old Christians line for 15 metres and Michael O’Shea broke towards the line and then off loaded to Robert O’Donoghue who crossed the whitewash and opened the scoring after just three minutes. The Ballincollig boys were dominant and after some good rucking the ball was fed to Scott Vaughan at outhalf. He broke the line and after making 20 metres, he passed to the supporting James Nyagaya who touched down for Ballincollig’s second try on 11 minutes and after another 4 minutes, they repeated the act when Aaron Mc Namara crashed through the centre and fed to the flying Shane Quinlan who scored Ballincollig’s third try which Scott Vaughan converted. Ballincollig were very dominant in all sectors of play and on 25 minutes, James Nagoya added to Old Christian’s woes when he scored his second try. To Old Christians credit, they did not give up and on the stroke of half time, they scored good try from a penalty tap, which was also converted to leave the score 22 pts to 7 in Ballincollig’s favour. On the resumption Ballincollig’s dominance continued where they excelled @ Scrum and lineout time where Fionnan Mc Dermott and Robert O’Donoghue were superb in the air and were ably assisted by Dylan Desmond, Peter Kelleher, Robert Nyhan, Michael O’Shea, and Humphrey O’Mahony. Ballincollig started a move from a scrum on Old Christians 10 meter line. Brian Verling fed out to the backs and Aaron O’Flynn came into the line from the full back position and beat two men before touching down for another try, which Scott Vaughan converted. The flying Shane Quinlan added another 10 minutes later and Humphrey O’Mahony finished the scoring with a try on the stroke of full time after some good work again by the forwards. Others to impress were James O’Donnell, Colin Casey, Jack O’Sullivan, Cian Shanahan, Ray Murphy, Daire Buckley, Stephen Mc Grath and Cian O’Leary. It was a great team performance by the Ballincollig boys but stiffer opposition no doubt lies ahead.
They play their second game on next Sat 9th Feb. 2013 at home to Dunmanway who have already beaten them this season.

A stellar performance from Ballincollig saw them narrowly beaten by a questionable try in the last few minutes of the game. Forde got a try under the posts in the first half which he converted. A very strong pack put Old Christains under pressure for the whole game and with some great breaks from the backs. Ballincollig were held short of the line on 3 further occasions. Old Christians scored a try but failed to convert. We kept them under pressure for the whole match and every player deserves man of the match. They scored a late try to steal the game 10-7. Well done everyone.

Ballincollig carved out a well deserved 8 try to 1 away friendly victory against a spirited Old Christians side. While this was not a cup final display, it certainly had all the hall marks of a new start, new year set of resolutions about it – Ballincollig turned up to win. Straight from the start Ballincollig covered much ground, hungry for possession – Fionnan McDermott and Rob O’Donoghue were ever present, creating havoc in the loose for Old Christians’ efforts to retain possession. Such pressure yielded early points as Rob Nyhan combined skill and strength to take a well deserved unconverted try. Playing his first match for Ballincollig, Aaron McNamara was unlucky to be stopped short inches from the try line – he performed extremely well throughout, scoring a great try at the end of the match. Also debutants, Brian Verling and Cameron Lucey combined excellently at half back, frequently causing much trouble for their opposite numbers and both displayed great enthusiasm for getting the Ballincollig back line moving. It should be noted, Cameron converted all but one of the tries in the game. The remainder of the first half ebbed and flowed with both sides threatening the opposition try lines on occasion. Sterling defence from Aaron O’Flynn, Dave O’Brien and Peter Kelleher kept the home side off the first half score sheet. At the other end Ballincollig were awarded a penalty try following repeated infringement by Old Christians.
The second half started as the first ended with great intensity of effort from both sides. With six tries to follow for Ballincollig, one would be mistaken for thinking the flood gates opened as most of this half was played in Ballincollig territory with Old Christians well drilled in defence and in retaining possession. Shane Quinlan took advantage of an early opportunity, sprinting the length of the pitch evading the cover defence to score a wonderful solo try. The Ballincollig scrum remained solid throughout with Dylan Desmond and Steve McGrath powerful in the front row. This provided the platform for the visitor’s next try taken well by Fionnan McDermott.
This was a team performance. The pack were strong with Humphrey O’Mahony topping off a great display with a fine try. The back line looked threatening with Scott Vaughan combing very well with James Nyagaya to finish off a good movement scoring with some style under the posts. Substitutes on the day Daire Buckley, Cian Shanahan, James O’Donnell and Jack O’Sullivan all performed excellently, seamlessly falling into position when called upon. It is clear there is intense competition for places at this stage of the season.
As Head Coach Robbie Ormond said “A heartening display and result for the players, coaches, back room staff and loyal supporters alike – a just reward for honesty of effort”. Here’s to a Happy New Year!

The lads displayed more excellent tackles and forward momentum on Saturday. Their placing of the ball and support in attack was very impressive. There were standout performances from Thomas, Sean, Ben, Dara and Brian and the lads ran in 6 tries to to tie the sides level at full time.

Ballincollig 9 Skibbereen 5
Skibbereen came to Tanner Park, on 8th of December. Both sides were evenly matched early on, but slowly Ballincollig started to gain control of proceedings by excellent tackling, rucking and counter rucking. Ballincollig showed the greater desire, and soon took the lead, Skibbereen however soon equalised. Directly from the tip off, Ballincollig scored again. Each side scored twice more before half time. Second half started brightly with Ballincollig scoring twice in quick succession. Skibbereen replied with a score but Ballincollig went over again. Skibbereen were next to score, cutting the deficit to two.
Skibbereen tried valiantly, but a superb defensive display from Ballincollig prevented Skibbereen from scoring again, and the game was finished off in style with two breakaway tries from Ballincollig.
Well Done lads, another fantastic victory

The under 11s came up against a big strong Skibereen side who travelled in strength with an unbeaten season behind them. Ballincollig to their credit and despite going behind early on kept their wits about them this week and these young boars produced a strong finish by scoring two late tries to draw the fixture at six tries each. Well done lads and we look forward to big improvements in our tackling which will see these tight matches result in victories
Under 12s
Despite having a full squad available on the day Ballincollig were beaten by a strong physical Skibbereen side. Our inability to take man and ball proved costly as the Skibbereen lads ran in tries to kill off the game by half time. Our trip to Skibbereen in March will have to be an opportunity to rectify the score line. Well done lads
Under 13s
The lead changed hands 4 times in a thrilling encounter between our U-13s and a big physical Fermoy side. Dominance in the scrums, great team spirit and great tackling by Sam Kiely and David O Driscoll and big performances by all the Ballincollig players including, Cathal Quirke, Mikey Fitton and Reece O Donohue, tries by Zak Forde and Jack Casey converted by Za) were not enough to deny Fermoy victory in the last minutes of the game. Well done lads.

Ballincollig 25 v Muskerry 5
Ballincollig under 15s had a very convincing away win against Muskerry yesterday. After a sluggish start Ballincollig soon showed their superiority in both the forwards and the backs. Ballincollig scored 5 well taken tries scored by both forwards and backs. Again this week Ballincollig did well in the scrums and line outs and their rucking and mauling had much improved from last weeks performance. There was some great defence and attacking play by the backs with yards gained on every attack. This was the last league game before the new year and ends a successful half of the season .Next week we have a friendly match against Dolphin which gives the fringe players a chance to show their skills and challenge for places in the new year.
