Mini’s & Youths Rugby notes for weekend 06/12

Under 18s

Ballincollig 10       Cork Con 13

Ballincollig U 18s suffered a second defeat in eight days after putting up an excellent performance against Cork Constitution. The home side started the brighter and within 4 minutes crossed the whitewash to open the scoring after Ballincollig turned over the ball on the half way line and Cork Cons quick counter attack through slick passing yielded the try. It was a sucker punch to the Ballincollig who were on the back foot from early in the game and could not get a foot hold in the opposition half for long periods. Ballincollig to their credit threatened the con line on a number of occasions but a number of infringements handed over the initiative to the home side who cleared their lines to great effect. On the 20th minute the home side again broke up a Ballincollig attack and again counter attacked again which yielded them a second try in the corner to leave the score 10 nil to the home side. Ballincollig regrouped the adopted their rucking and mauling game to good effect and after securing a line out by Fionnán Mc Dermott inside the 22 proved unstoppable as Humphrey O Mahony touched down for Ballincollig’s opening try. Both sides cancelled out each other until the half time whistle. On the resumption the home side continued to press and were awarded a penalty on the Ballincollig 22 which was duly converted to leave them 13 pts to 5 ahead. Ballincollig battled on and after 7 seven phases of rucking on the home sides 5 metre line Kevin O Riordan proved unstoppable and scored his sides 2nd try. With only 3 pts between the sides now and just 5 mins left it was helter skelter to the end. On the last play of the game Ballincollig had possession on the home sides 22. They rucked for a number of occasions and when Peach Kelleher took the ball on from 5 metres at pace he was just stopped short of the line and the final whistle was blown. It was a nail biting finish to an excellent game of rugby served up by 2 evenly matched committed sides. Con to their credit defended like their lives depended on it which yielded them the hard fought win. The Ballincollig boys were disappointed after putting in such a big shift and can be proud of their efforts. Another big game awaits them on next sat as they host Sundays well @ Tanner Park.
