U18 League

Last Saturday saw Ballincollig away to Bandon in the U18 League. Our next step in this season’s campaign was a hotly contested one. Both sides playing some great rugby and rock solid defences saw the game tied at 0-0 at half time, with a penalty missed from each side. The deadlock was broken by a pick and drive Team effort that was well grounded by James Kelleher to give Ballincollig the lead. The tempo of the game was now lifted to the max and the second score came from many hard-yard phases of play. Captain Peter Kelleher this time grounding the ball over the Bandon try line. This try was converted by Cameron Lucey, giving Ballincollig a 12-0 lead. The home Team fought back with many great breaks and a try was scored to bring them up to 12-5. The conversion was not on target. Ballincollig fought hard in defence time and again, and had to put in some heart stopping tackles to keep the Bandon onslaught at bay. The game finished 12 – 5 in Ballincolligs favour – a great game of rugby. This sets us up for a top of the table clash with Mitchelstown at home next Saturday.

U16 League

Ballincollig U16s had a great win in their home league game against Old Christians last Saturday. This was a closely contested match with some great forward play and back play by both teams. In the first 20 minutes Ballincollig were put under fierce pressure in their own 22 but due to great defence and a brilliant individual try by Tadgh Corkery Ballincollig went 7 up against the run of play. Old Christians fought back with a great try of their own by spreading the ball wide and scoring in the corner to make the score 7 points to 5 at half time. In the second half Ballincollig scored another 2 great tries with the first try scored by both backs and forwards working together and the second try scored by kicking the ball into space with forwards and backs chasing to score in the corner. Old Christians also scored a try in the second half due to a lapse in the Ballincollig defence. The final score was 19 points to 10 in Ballincolligs favour. Ballincolligs next league game is away to Charleville next Saturday. Well done lads! Great win!

U12

Perfect rugby conditions greeted both teams for this local challenge and what a treat of a match everyone got. Muskerry got off to a flyer with 3 tries in the first 10 minutes. Ballincollig eventually woke up with Liam Mc Garry crossing for a try to end the period 2 behind. An exciting 2nd period from a much hungrier Ballincollig team resulted in 8 tries to finish the period on level terms on 6 each. The final period saw more open running rugby, big tackles and strong support from both teams and inevitably more tries which resulted in a fair final result of 9 all. Special mention after a slow start to Gearoid O’Brien who caught, ran and tackled impressively in the final 2 periods and also Oisin O’Grady and Shane Buckley who both drove well into contact and always managed to get the ball back to support. Well done all and keep this good work up as we are continue to improve. Matches continue next week away to Skibbereen.

U8

The Ballincollig lads short of a few players but with great parental support travelled to Whitechurch on Saturday. They gave it their all in the two games against a strong Midleton outfit and also played one against the home side Shandon. The effects of a late night for the toy show was evident at times but there was some great patches of play and committed tackling. Harnessing their enthusiasm to work as a team along will go a long way with many more games to come. Well done lads keep up the good work
