Weekend 5th January 2013 Match Reports

Under 17s

Ballincollig carved out a well deserved 8 try to 1 away friendly victory against a spirited Old Christians side. While this was not a cup final display, it certainly had all the hall marks of a new start, new year set of resolutions about it – Ballincollig turned up to win. Straight from the start Ballincollig covered much ground, hungry for possession – Fionnan McDermott and Rob O’Donoghue were ever present, creating havoc in the loose for Old Christians’ efforts to retain possession. Such pressure yielded early points as Rob Nyhan combined skill and strength to take a well deserved unconverted try. Playing his first match for Ballincollig, Aaron McNamara was unlucky to be stopped short inches from the try line – he performed extremely well throughout, scoring a great try at the end of the match. Also debutants, Brian Verling and Cameron Lucey combined excellently at half back, frequently causing much trouble for their opposite numbers and both displayed great enthusiasm for getting the Ballincollig back line moving. It should be noted, Cameron converted all but one of the tries in the game. The remainder of the first half ebbed and flowed with both sides threatening the opposition try lines on occasion. Sterling defence from Aaron O’Flynn, Dave O’Brien and Peter Kelleher kept the home side off the first half score sheet. At the other end Ballincollig were awarded a penalty try following repeated infringement by Old Christians.

The second half started as the first ended with great intensity of effort from both sides. With six tries to follow for Ballincollig, one would be mistaken for thinking the flood gates opened as most of this half was played in Ballincollig territory with Old Christians well drilled in defence and in retaining possession. Shane Quinlan took advantage of an early opportunity, sprinting the length of the pitch evading the cover defence to score a wonderful solo try. The Ballincollig scrum remained solid throughout with Dylan Desmond and Steve McGrath powerful in the front row. This provided the platform for the visitor’s next try taken well by Fionnan McDermott.

This was a team performance. The pack were strong with Humphrey O’Mahony topping off a great display with a fine try. The back line looked threatening with Scott Vaughan combing very well with James Nyagaya to finish off a good movement scoring with some style under the posts. Substitutes on the day Daire Buckley, Cian Shanahan, James O’Donnell and Jack O’Sullivan all performed excellently, seamlessly falling into position when called upon. It is clear there is intense competition for places at this stage of the season.

As Head Coach Robbie Ormond said “A heartening display and result for the players, coaches, back room staff and loyal supporters alike – a just reward for honesty of effort”. Here’s to a Happy New Year!
